How Many Aluminum Cans Make a Pound?
A pound of empty aluminum cans is not always the same number of cans. The estimate depends on how much each empty can weighs. Compare sourced reference weights or enter your own measured can weight for a closer estimate.

Aluminum Can Weight Comparison
| Can assumption | Empty-can weight | Estimated cans per pound | Source type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Industry average | 12.99 g | ~35 | Industry average |
| 12 oz standard | 13.61 g | ~33 | Product specification |
| 16 oz standard | 18.14 g | ~25 | Product specification |
The 12 oz and 16 oz labels describe beverage capacity. They do not mean the empty cans themselves weigh 12 or 16 ounces.
How Many Aluminum Cans Are in 1, 5 or 10 Pounds?
This table uses the industry-average preset and the same calculation domain as the calculator. Select another can type above to compare its rate, or use your measured average for a closer estimate.
| Total weight | Estimated cans |
|---|---|
| 1 lb | ~35 |
| 5 lb | ~175 |
| 10 lb | ~349 |
| 20 lb | ~698 |
Why the Answer Varies
Two cans that look similar do not necessarily contain exactly the same amount of aluminum. Can dimensions, wall thickness, end design and manufacturer specifications can change the empty-can weight.
Because cans-per-pound is calculated from empty-can weight, a lighter can produces a higher cans-per-pound estimate, while a heavier can produces a lower estimate. Soda cans, pop cans and aluminum beverage cans all use the same basic count-by-weight logic: the empty-can weight determines the estimate.
A fixed rule such as “24 cans per pound” should not be treated as universal.
How Cans Per Pound Is Calculated
One pound contains 453.59237 grams. Divide that weight by the average empty-can weight in grams to estimate how many cans fit into one pound.
453.59237 g ÷ empty-can weight in grams = estimated cans per pound
Example based on the industry-average assumption: 453.59237 ÷ 12.99 ≈ 34.92 cans per pound.
How to Get a Better Estimate
- Collect several clean, dry empty cans of the type you actually have.
- Weigh them together.
- Divide the measured weight by the number of cans.
- Enter the resulting average grams per can as a custom weight.
Weighing several cans together reduces the effect of scale resolution and small differences between individual cans. Crushing changes volume, not the amount of aluminum. A scrap yard may still have its own preparation or acceptance requirements.
For the underlying mass conversion, you can calculate aluminum-can weight from a known count.
Does Crushing Aluminum Cans Change How Many Make a Pound?
No, crushing changes the space the cans occupy, not their aluminum mass. If the same clean cans are weighed before and after crushing, the total metal weight should remain essentially the same.
Recycling facilities may have their own rules for accepting crushed or uncrushed containers.
FAQ
How many aluminum cans make one pound?
It depends on the empty-can weight. The sourced examples on this page range from about 25 to 35 cans per pound.
How many 12 oz aluminum cans make a pound?
Using the specific 13.61 g 12 oz product specification on this page, the estimate is about 33 cans per pound. Other 12 oz cans may weigh differently.
How many 16 oz aluminum cans make a pound?
Using the 18.14 g product specification on this page, the estimate is about 25 cans per pound. This is a sourced product example, not a universal 16 oz can weight.
How many soda cans make a pound?
There is no single universal count. Use the empty-can weight for the cans you have or select a sourced preset above.
Does crushing cans change how many make a pound?
Crushing changes volume, not aluminum mass, so it does not by itself change the number of the same cans needed to make a pound.
How can I get the most accurate estimate?
Weigh several clean, dry empty cans together and divide the total weight by the number of cans, then enter that average as a custom weight.
