How Scrap Value Calc Estimates Scrap Value

Scrap Value Calc separates arithmetic from market claims. It applies the inputs you provide to documented conversion rules and labels assumptions wherever a real load may vary.

Weight × price is the core calculation

For material already weighed, the basic estimate is weight multiplied by the buyer's quoted price per pound. A pound stays a pound, while kilograms, ounces, grams, short tons and metric tonnes are converted to pounds using fixed mass conversions before the value is calculated.

For example, 10 lb at a user-entered rate of $2 per lb produces a mathematical estimate of $20.00. The number is only as useful as the weight, rate and material classification supplied by the user.

Quantity-based calculations

When a user has a count instead of a scale reading, the calculator first multiplies quantity by the selected average item weight. The resulting grams are converted to pounds, then multiplied by the local price per pound. Items-per-pound is the same relationship shown in reverse: grams per pound divided by grams per item.

Target calculations reverse the same relationship. A requested dollar amount divided by the entered price gives required pounds. If an item weight is supplied, that weight converts the pounds into an estimated item count, rounded up to a whole item for planning.

Can-weight assumptions are not universal

Aluminum can estimates use three distinct records: an industry-average preset at 12.99 g, a sourced 12 oz product specification at 13.61 g, and a sourced 16 oz product specification at 18.14 g. A beverage capacity label is not the empty metal weight.

The industry average is useful for a broad estimate; a product specification describes one documented format, not every can sold. Manufacturers, designs and can ends vary. If the actual collection matters, weigh several clean, dry empty cans and divide by the count.

Custom measured weight and local price

The custom option lets the user replace an assumption with an average measured weight in grams. That entered value flows through the same calculation domain as sourced presets; it does not silently fall back to the 12.99 g industry average.

Prices are intentionally user-entered. Scrap yards can quote different rates based on grade, contamination, quantity, location, buyer policies and changing market conditions. Scrap Value Calc does not claim live pricing and does not turn an estimate into a purchase offer.

Display rounding and source review

Internal calculations retain their conversion precision. The interface rounds displayed pounds and dollar values for readability, shows per-item values to three decimal places where useful, and shows count-based target requirements as complete whole items. Display rounding is presentation only; it does not change the underlying calculation.

Can-weight assumptions and source records were reviewed on 2026-09-17. Source records identify whether a value is an industry average or a product specification, along with the publisher and source URL. Review dates describe the data record, not a live market price.

Estimate, not guaranteed payout

An estimate can be arithmetically correct and still differ from a recycler's final payout. The buyer may reclassify material, deduct contamination, use a different payable weight, or apply local redemption rules. Confirm the accepted material and current rate directly with the facility before relying on an estimate.

Sources & assumptions

Preset weights are sourced reference values for estimation. They do not imply that every can of the same labeled capacity has exactly the same empty weight.
